Up to 8,000 football fans marched through Brighton this week to campaign for a new stadium for Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club. Deputy prime minister John Prescott has reconvened a public inquiry into the club's application for a stadium at Falmer (Planning, 23 July, p1) to consider more evidence on the suitability of alternative sites.

In brief: Historic aviation buildings to be restored

Historic aviation buildings at Farnborough Business Park previously covered by Official Secrets Act rules are to be restored and opened to the public for the first time. The £20 million scheme by Slough Estates covers a 10ha cluster of wind tunnel and research buildings at the former Royal Aircraft Establishment. The proposals include a public square, offices, a heritage centre, a cafe-bar and a nursery. Work will start later this month and is expected to be complete by July 2006.

Physical regeneration news: Scotland successes

A shortlist has been drawn up for the best new building in Scotland. One of the four buildings shortlisted for the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland award is St Aloysius College in Glasgow. The judges described the college (above) as a "solid, memorable building" that respects its surroundings. The judges also selected Maggie's Cancer Caring Respite Centre in Dundee, designed by Gehry Partners, the architects' first building in Britain. The two other buildings on the shortlist are a timber live/work unit in Durness, in the Highlands, and an arts centre built in a converted church in Peebles. The winning building will be announced at a ceremony in Edinburgh later this month.

In brief: Messages of support delivered to Downing Street

More than 40,000 messages of support for Manchester's Metrolink extension plans were delivered to Downing Street last week. The plans were refused by transport secretary Alistair Darling over spiralling costs (Planning, 23 July, p1). Campaigners hope the tide of popular opinion will convince the government of the need for the extension alongside a revised analysis of the economic, social and environmental benefits, due to be submitted to ministers within the next few weeks.
