Homelessness has risen more than twice as fast among ethnic minority households compared with the rest of the population, according to a report from the homelessness charity Shelter. The report, published last week, says homelessness among black and minority ethnic households has increased by 77 per cent since 1997, compared with 34 per cent among the general population. Over 30,000 BME households were homeless during 2003/04. Shelter director Adam Sampson said: "For children who are already at risk of disadvantage, bad housing can have a devastating effect on their education, health, and future prospects." Plans to design and develop an 11ha Millennium Community in the North-West took a step forward this week with the announcement of a shortlist of architects and developers. The competition to develop the community in East Manchester was run by developer Urban Splash. The shortlist of seven includes Taylor Woodrow Developments with Shedkm Architects, and Igloo Regeneration Partnership/Aviva with de Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects.

Glasgow City Council has given the go-ahead for detailed proposals to be drawn up for the city's parks. As the first stage in the comprehensive redevelopment proposals, the council is hoping to form partnerships with private businesses to lease or franchise facilities for cafes and restaurants, as well as facilities for boating, garden centres and open-air events.
