The fight to sustain a small primary school in a remote Cumbrian village has been boosted by a grant of more than £21,000 from the Co-operative Action Foundation. State backing for the 150-year-old school was withdrawn by the county council earlier this year, but the local community is fighting to keep Lowick School, near Coniston Water, open. The cash is being used to support the school's bid to become the first state-funded co-operative school.

Seven schools and communities in Wales will share half a million pounds of lottery cash to develop sports facilities, the Big Lottery Fund has announced. Schools in Gwynedd, Denbigh and Wrexham will share more than £300,000 while a further three awards totalling £160,000 have been allocated to schools in Cardiff, Caerphilly and Torfaen. The funding forms part of the £50 million New Opportunities for PE and Sport programme.
