Selby's last mine closes

An era came to a close this week in Selby, Yorkshire, when the last of the coalfield's five mines closed. Digging at the Riccall mine (above) ceased 21 years after the Selby "superpit" was opened as part of an ambitious plan to safeguard the industry amid widespread pit closures. At its peak, the coalfield employed more than 3,500 people, but this had declined to just 260 this week. Energy minister Mike O'Brien said it was a "very sad day" for Selby.

Consultancy Owen Williams has appointed Andrew Taylor as contract manager for its office in Barrow-in-Furness. Taylor will lead the company's contribution to several key projects over the coming months, including Barrow Borough Council's town centre regeneration programme.

Eric summers joins Heart of England Consultancy

Eric Summers has joined Heart of England Consultancy as senior consultant. He was previously project manager and area manager at Yorkshire Housing Group. In his new role, Summers will be responsible for extending the consultancy's services to tenants' and residents' groups and housing and regeneration organisations in the Midlands and north of England.

Jim Hendry appointed as chairman of charity Access North Ayr

Jim Hendry has been appointed as chairman of economic regeneration and employment charity Access North Ayr. Hendry is vice-convener of the Ayr North Social Inclusion Partnership, chairs the Caring Theme Group and is vice-chair of the national Scottish Partnership Representatives Network and is also a member of the Ayr North Community Forum Management Committee. Chief executive Bill Munsie has left to become managing director of the Greater Pollok Development Company.
