Regeneration News brief: BCSC unveils shortlist for awards

The British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC), has unveiled the shortlist for its annual Town Centre Improvement Awards. Ten projects are up for recognition in Bedford, Bognor Regis, Chelmsford, Coventry, Harlow, Perth, Portsmouth, Sale, Sheffield and Walthamstow. Judges will visit the projects this week and the winners will be announced at the BCSC's annual conference at the beginning of November.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds last week called on the Government to make the Thames Gateway "an outstanding example of sustainable development". In a report it also demands for the protection of all nationally important wildlife sites and the creation of more, accessible nature reserves. Regeneration News brief: Aspinall Packer Group unveils proposals

The Aspinall Packer Group has unveiled proposals for a £50 million leisure facility at Brierley Hill in the West Midlands. The planned complex includes bars, restaurants, a casino and a 1,000-person performing arts venue. The group said that the complex, Aspers Brierley Hill, would create 1,000 jobs, with a further 2,000 people indirectly employed in local businesses. It also plans to invest in a training centre at Brierley Hill where local people would receive accredited training to work at the complex.

Some of the most important sites in the history of British aviation, where innovations such as the ejector seat and space-suit technology were developed, are to be restored as part of a £20 million regeneration scheme. The plans for the 10ha Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, Hampshire, include a public square and the transformation of historic aviation buildings into offices, studio workshops, a heritage centre, a cafe-bar and a children's nursery. The plans are being implemented by Slough Estates, with government built conservation adviser English Heritage, campaign group Save Britain's Heritage and Rushmoor Borough Council.

South West regeneration centre Creating: Excellence has appointed Dominic Murphy as its first executive director. The £3 million centre, set to be launched in a series of events at the end of the month, is intended to become a resource for the development of sustainable communities in the region. It is supported by 60 local organisations and the South West of England Regional Development Agency. Murphy has worked as Creating: Excellence's development manager since June and before that was senior policy adviser to the ODPM's neighbourhood renewal unit.

Regeneration News brief: London Development Agency launches consultation

The London Development Agency has launched consultation on the future of Crystal Palace Park in the south-east of the capital. Suggestions for the 81ha site include six options for the park's National Sports Centre. Among the options are major refurbishment to extend the lifespan of the existing centre and building a new facility closer to the park's entrance and public transport links. Plans for the park itself include reclaiming concreted areas for parkland and improving links to local centres. The consultation runs until 26 September.
