A 2,000-home development on two brownfield sites near Northampton town centre was given the go-ahead this week. One of the sites will involve the redevelopment of cosmetics company Avon UK's headquarters and the construction of 1,250 homes by housebuilder Gallagher Estates. The adjacent site, owned by government regeneration agency English Partnerships, will be used for 750 homes.

Housebuilder Bovis Homes has submitted a planning application for a 275ha mixed-use extension to Wellingborough in Northamptonshire. The proposed scheme, called Wellingborough East, includes 3,200 new homes, 68ha of land devoted to employment use, a transport interchange and community facilities. The ODPM has already approved £10.6 million from the Sustainable Communities Fund to pay for local infrastructure work.

Scottish News: Edinburgh unveils waterfront vision

Residents have demanded an inquiry into why a hotel and leisure scheme in Durham city centre has been delayed for two years. Completion of the privately-funded Walkergate scheme is now not expected until the summer of 2006. In a Durham City Council meeting last week, residents demanded a probe into why the scheme, which developers claimed would transform the city centre, is so far behind schedule.
