The transformation of a bicycle shed into a "sun-filled airy space" has won Jim Garland the Ibstock Downland Prize for small architecture projects in the south and south-east of England. Garland designed the conversion of the shed, at an end-of-terrace property (above, left) in Emsworth, Hampshire, into a space of three distinct areas: entrance, living area and mezzanine floor (above, right). Other winners in the awards, which are given by the Royal Institute of British Architects, included Duncan Baker-Brown in the sustainable design category, Dido Milne for urban renewal, Nicholas Rowe for small projects, and Sandy Scott for public architecture. A £70 million music venue on Gateshead's quayside will be opened to the public on 17 December. The Sage Gateshead, designed by Foster and Partners, includes a 25-room music education centre, a recording studio, two performance spaces, an entertainment suite, bars, a cafe and a brasserie linked by a glazed concourse. The Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council project, part of regeneration of the riverside area, has been supported by Arts Council England, with funding from the National Lottery and One North East. Councillor Mick Henry said that the completion of the building is a major milestone in the area's regeneration that will put Gateshead on a "world stage".

Consultants have been invited to tender to prepare neighbourhood development frameworks (NDFs) for four areas outlined in Bradford's city centre masterplan. The frameworks will provide detailed delivery programmes for the city's regeneration and inform Bradford City Council's new city centre planning policy. The first NDFs will be prepared for the Markets and Channel neighbourhoods, addressing the impact of the Broadway shopping centre scheme on the retail core and development interest in a canalside urban village. NDFs on the Valley and the Bowl areas will be started before the end of the year, Bradford Centre Regeneration said.

Regeneration News brief: Bristol City Council expected to hand over land

Bristol City Council was expected to hand over land and buildings at Withywood to the South Bristol Church and Community Trust for a peppercorn price so it can create facilities for local people as Planning went to press this week. The trust will then sell the land for housing development and use the money raised to set up a youth cafe and healthy living centre. The council was also set to approve a plan to pedestrianise a roundabout at the junction of King Street, as part of the final phase of the regeneration of the city's Georgian Queen Square.
