News brief: John Prescott announces list of speakers

Deputy prime minister John Prescott this week announced a list of speakers from around the world for the Delivering Sustainable Communities Summit planned for January 2005 as an update on the Urban Summit. Speakers include John Norquist, the president of the Congress for New Urbanism, a US organisation promoting traditional forms of town development.

News brief: North-south divide worst for three years

The north-south divide in economic performance is at its worst for three years, according to research published this week by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The study found the South-East to be the strongest performing region, followed by the East Midlands. The West Midlands, the North-East and Scotland are the worst performing areas. RBS blamed the problem on a weakening in export markets. The RBS Purchasing Manager's Index can be viewed at www.rbs.co.uk.

In brief: Chairman appointed to Countryside Agency

Environment secretary Margaret Beckett this week appointed Reverend Stuart Burgess, a senior Methodist minister, as the chairman of the Countryside Agency and the government's rural advocate. Burgess takes over from Pam Warhurst, who has been acting chairwoman since Ewen Cameron retired in April. Warhurst will remain deputy chairwoman.

Dinah Nichols has been elected as chair of the board of directors at environmental regeneration charity Groundwork Camden and Islington. Nichols is the former director-general of the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. She takes over from Robin Mabey, who had chaired the board since 2001. James Littlewood has also joined Groundwork Camden and Islington as community team manager for Islington.

In brief: Planning minister reappoints members

Planning minister Keith Hill last week reappointed Tim Corner QC and Tony Prior, current specialist panel members, to the Advisory Panel on Standards for the Planning Inspectorate. Hill also appointed barrister Richard Harwood as a specialist member and Norma Huddy as a lay member. The panel's annual report will be published in the autumn.

Zoe Tolman has been appointed as part-time community information officer for the Kendray Initiative, a partnership that aims to drive forward the regeneration of the Kendray area in Barnsley. Tolman's role will be to highlight to residents what services are available to them, such as encouraging them to take part in further education and learning.

Lucozade sign on M4 is removed

The Lucozade sign on the M4 in London has been removed. The sign was kept as a landmark by GlaxoSmithKine on its Lucozade Annexe building, which has been disused for many years. The building will make way for Audi's UK headquarters and the sign has been given to a museum. GlazoSmithKine, advised by Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners, has applied to the London Borough of Hounslow for a replica sign nearby.

Pippa McVeigh has been appointed as community safety and drug supply reduction manager at Wiltshire County Council. She will be responsible for planning and coordinating the council's contribution to the development and implementation of strategies to reduce crime, disorder and fear of crime. She joins from West Wiltshire District Council, where she was a community safety officer.
