10 September 2004
Parks are the nation's "free Prozac" and more effort should be put into promoting their use to the public, according to open spaces adviser GreenSpace. A report by the group claims experts should be getting the message across that parks and public spaces are essential to the nation's health. Great Parks, Great Cities: London 2004 Conference Report is available at www.green-space.org.uk.

Opinion: Fyson on ... facing up to the need for a sound population policy
10 September 2004
Discussion of population policy, or whether the government should have one, all too often gets no further than arguments about tougher controls on immigration and family size. The latest estimate, showing that Britain's population will rise by four million over the next two decades and by a further 1.5 million by 2050, may have eliminated any doubt about the need for an accelerated house building programme. But it has also triggered more simplistic assertions from would-be fertility managers and immigration controllers, along with even wilder speculation from the proponents of "ecological footprinting".
