Three city centre projects in Sheffield have secured planning permission following negotiations by Development Land & Planning Consultants. A mixed-use development featuring a 22-storey glass-fronted tower will be built on the edge of the city centre near the ring road and Ecclesall Road. The scheme provides 233 flats, nine live-work units and A1, A3, B1 and D2 uses. An old car sales site on Fitzwilliam Street will be transformed into a six to eight-storey building with 40 flats. A constrained site at the rear of a listed building on Devonshire Street will be developed as 43 private flats.

A seafront strategy for part of the Sussex coastline is to be drawn up by consultancy GHK. The project for Sea Space, a development company set up by the Hastings and Bexhill Task Force, covers a 14km seafront from Rock-a-Nore in Hastings to Herbrand Walk in Bexhill-on-Sea. The consultants are tasked with identifying economic development, public investment and land development opportunities. GHK will be supported by Tibbalds Planning & Urban Design, transport planners at Halcrow and Cluttons Quantity Surveyors. Results of the study will be delivered by late November.

Plans to regenerate a former steelworks site into a town centre in Ravenscraig, Scotland, were challenged in court last week by companies that own shopping centres in neighbouring towns. Parallel studies of what sustainable development means for Bishop's Stortford and East Hertfordshire are to be carried out by Roger Evans Associates and Land Use Consultants. The work for East Hertfordshire District Council has been prompted by national and regional planning guidance. Bishop's Stortford is a key element in the M11 corridor growth area in the government's sustainable communities plan. Growth will be considered for the town as a whole and in relation to sustainability across the district. The two-pronged approach seeks to find ways of adding to the town's assets rather than building on isolated development sites.

A design framework and masterplan for Loughborough town centre is to be prepared by Atkins Urban Design and Regeneration for Charnwood Borough Council. The commission includes drafting a strategic framework, looking at the possibility of creating distinct quarters, determining public realm improvements and improving ease of movement. Development proposals will be drawn up for three major sites.

The communications strategy for a major regeneration project in Harlow, Essex, is to be developed with guidance from communications consultancy Camargue. The firm, which specialises in regeneration, property and the built environment, will advise the Harlow Gateway Partnership, which comprises Harlow Council, the Harlow Sports Trust, the ODPM and English Partnerships. The scheme will deliver homes and sports facilities on an 11ha brownfield site at the gateway to the town centre.

Community arts organisation the Public has been awarded £75,000 from the ODPM's Special Grants Programme to explore the construction of live/work spaces. The initiative, which runs until autumn 2005, will be delivered by the Public in collaboration with a range of partners, including architect Will Alsop. The first phase, which runs until next month, incorporates a two-day event, combining workshop activities, group discussion and guest speakers.
