A design guide for Bradford's core area is set to be commissioned by urban regeneration company Bradford Centre Regeneration (BCR). The document will aim to lay out guidelines for the design and redevelopment of the city centre area and should be completed by the end of the year. BCR said that it will work closely with Bradford City Council's planning service to manage the production of the guide. Marc Cole, director of operations at BCR, commented: "Without robust design guidance, it is difficult for the planning authority to resist poor-quality development."
News brief: Lessons in setting up own business

More than 6,000 primary age children in disadvantaged areas of the East Midlands will be given lessons in setting up their own business as part of a scheme funded by the East Midlands Development Agency. The programme comprises six modules, one for each year of primary education, each of which is run over five one-hour sessions.

Plans for a mixed-use development on surplus land at Stocksbridge Works near Sheffield have been put out to public consultation. The draft brief, prepared by consultancy GVA Grimley, will be open for comment until 27 September. It outlines proposals for manufacturing and distribution facilities, offices, housing, retail and leisure uses at the Corus Engineering Steels site. The steel company expects to gain consent before the end of the year as part of its restructuring programme.

The Government's regeneration agency has appointed a new head of national consultancy. Jerome Frost, who previously worked in the development planning division at consultancy Arup, will be in charge of developing English Partnerships' national consultancy team and overseeing the creation of the Advisory Panel for Large Applications, aimed at unlocking the issues holding up major planning applications in England's growth areas.

A Victorian pumphouse at Chatham Maritime marina in Kent has been restored by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). The building, which overlooks the 300-berth marina on the River Medway, originally pumped water from the dry docks allowing work to be carried out on ships' hulls. It fell into disrepair after the dockyard closed in 1984. Suggestions for its future use include luxury apartments, a restaurant and a marine clubhouse.

An extensive public consultation is to be carried out on plans to develop land between the Great Western Hospital and Coate Water Park in Swindon. The site has been earmarked by Swindon Borough Council for the development of a university campus, hospital expansion and housing. The consultation, organised by the Swindon Gateway Partnership, will involve stakeholder presentations, public exhibitions, focus groups and newsletters being sent to more than 16,500 households.
