Melanie Griffin has joined consultancy Arup as an associate. She will be responsible for developing Objective 1 and 2 applications for a new airport, business park and a large industrial area, appraising structural fund applications and carrying out an economic impact assessment for a new stadium. Arup has also appointed Richard Crabtree as senior planner to work on a range of planning and transport policy.

Children's play facilities in Corfe Mullen, Dorset are set to be improved following the award of a £30,000 grant to Victoria Close Tenants and Residents Association. The Government's Living Spaces scheme has allocated £25,000, and an additional £5,000 has been awarded by East Dorset District Council. New equipment will be installed next spring.

Stop Press: Procurement process for new public buildings

The procurement process for new public buildings is biased in favour of the Private Finance Initiative, research by a left-of-centre think-tank claims. A report published this week by the Institute for Public Policy Research argues that although the Government has introduced a new selection process for PFI, assessments are still biased against conventional forms of public procurement. It says this is because departments use PFI rather than other forms of procurement for accounting rather than value for money reasons. Stop Press: Appointment at RegenCo

RegenCo, the urban regeneration company covering Smethwick and West Bromwich, has announced two appointments. Operations director Chris White has been promoted to deputy chief executive. He will also take responsibility for development following the departure of development director Eileen Molloy. Steve Boffey has also joined as marketing director.
