Current plans for the Thames Gateway growth corridor would harm the environment and damage the quality of life of residents, an environmental campaign group claimed last week. Friends of the Earth said the proposals would push the area "beyond its natural limits", putting pressure on water resources and land space, and increasing traffic pollution and noise.
Physical Regeneration Brief: Developer chosen for homes in Telford

A developer has been chosen to build the first section of a mixed-use sustainable community planned for south-west Telford. Government regeneration agency English Partnerships announced last week that Persimmon Homes has been appointed to build the first 40 of the 800 homes planned for Lightmoor Village. The partnership said that 30 of the 40 homes would be for sale, with ten owned and managed by housing association the Bournville Village Trust.

An information system for social housing tenants who wish to move within the UK was launched last week. The online Housing and Employment Mobility Scheme (Hems) is intended to offer housing and employment information in one package. The ODPM said Hems will be launched in early 2005. Physical Regeneration: Blackpool's new wave

A facelift to part of Blackpool's seafront was officially unveiled last week. A section of the South Shore promenade has been spruced up with modern sculpture, solar powered studs in the ground that glow at night, an illuminated wall in the shape of a crashing wave (above) and street lighting columns curved like fishing rods under tension. The project was funded with £2.1 million from the European Regional Development Fund and £2.3 million from the North-West Development Agency. NWDA said that the transformed section of promenade marked a new Southern Gateway entrance to Blackpool and part of a masterplan for the whole town.

The use of a greenfield site in Cambridgeshire as travelling showpeople's quarters has been allowed after an inspector agreed that there was an undisputed need for such accommodation. In arriving at his conclusion, he noted that the appellant currently lived on a site that was severely overcrowded and provided inadequate security for his family and equipment.
