A financial education programme that aims to offer support to those in debt by helping them to manage their money and obtain low cost loans has been launched in the deprived Cardenden and Levenmouth areas of Fife in Scotland. Aylesbury New Deal for Communities (NDC) in Southwark in south London has won the backing of residents to undertake the first stage of improvements for the Aylesbury estate. Over 65 per cent of residents in the estate's Bradenham and Chiltern blocks took part in the consultation, with more than 90 per cent supporting proposals including ground-level access to all homes.

A housing regeneration scheme has created double the number of local job and training opportunities planned, the housing association behind it announced last week. The project, led by Leicester Housing Association in the north Braunstone area of the city, has transformed 230 former council homes, providing 131 jobs and training places for local people. The original target was 64.

Two grants aimed at helping volunteers to help others were announced by charities minister Fiona Mactaggart last week. The National Mentoring Network and Volunteering England have been awarded £800,000 to co-develop a national mentoring network. The Women's Royal Voluntary Service received £600,000 to promote the involvement of older volunteers.
