North London Ltd, launched last week, aims to bring together the private sector, the London Development Agency and Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest councils to create more affordable premises, streamline business support, and improve access to finance.

Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands last week approved a £600,000 grant to retrain workers from the region's ailing potteries industry. The funding will allow the Ceramic and Allied Trades Union to continue its workforce retraining as part of the north Staffordshire Ceramic Workforce Development Project. The grant application was backed by Jobcentre Plus and the Learning and Skills Council.

A radical piece of policy that will allow businesses to lead regeneration in their area passed through parliament this week. The legislation, which creates Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), allows firms to hold local referendums on whether to introduce an annual levy to be used solely to make improvements to business quarters.
