More than 50 guests this week witnessed the start of a demolition programme in the Camborne, Pool and Redruth urban regeneration company area, when local man Sammy Lee-Jose took the controls of a digger and knocked down the garage his grandfather built in the 1930s. Lee-Jose won a competition organised by CPR Regeneration to kick-off the demolition. The Avers garage site will be used for part of a £6 million development made up of housing, offices and community facilities. Anne Mitchell, chair of the Redruth North Partnership, said: "A lot of people have waited a long time for this day and it's great to see work starting at last." See Tim Williams, p16.

Pilot areas where housing benefit is paid directly to tenants rather than their landlords have not seen worsened rent arrears or created slum housing markets, according to the Government. Launching the next round of housing benefit council pathfinders, housing benefit minister Chris Pond said there was no increase in arrears in testbed areas.

News brief: Shortlist for London Planning Awards

The shortlist for this year's London Planning Awards is to include the Chelsea Bridge Wharf development, the Paddington Central masterplan, the Putney Wharf development and the Walthamstow Town Centre regeneration, London mayor Ken livingstone announced this week. The awards are run jointly by the Mayor's Office, business campaign group London First and the Royal Town Planning Institute. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in City Hall on 30 November.

Deputy prime minister John Prescott this week announced a list of speakers from around the world for the Delivering Sustainable Communities Summit planned for January 2005 as an update on the Urban Summit. Speakers include John Norquist, the president of the Congress for New Urbanism, a US organisation promoting traditional forms of town development.
