The main political parties should commit themselves to developing planning policies and design codes that produce genuinely mixed-use developments catering for a range of incomes, tenures and household types, according to the National Housing Federation. It is calling on all main parties to put affordable housing and sustainable communities at the heart of their general election campaigns.

Learning and regeneration umbrella body Hackney Training and Employment Network has appointed Sonia Khan as its new chief executive. She replaces Elizabeth Balgobin, the founding chief executive, who leaves the organisation after seven years. Khan will take up her post in October.

Mortimer will be responsible for ensuring the coalfield programme's 100 sites meet their output and spend targets. He joins from consultancy GVA Grimley where he was a development consultant.

The Waterways Trust and the British Urban Regeneration Association are calling for nominations for the third Waterways Renaissance Awards. The awards, which aim to recognise and encourage best practice in sustainable waterway development and regeneration throughout the UK,are split into seven categories.
