A mixed-use development on a brownfield site near the River Thames at Vauxhall has received an award from local authority building control officers for the best apartment site in England. St George Wharf was judged to have exceeded regulatory requirements and achieved the highest standards of construction. The 22-storey complex will offer 750 private and affordable homes, bars, restaurants, office space and shops.
News brief: TUC attacks opponents of North-East regional assembly

Opponents of the proposed elected North-East regional assembly were attacked by the Trades Union Congress this week for spreading "misleading information" about the closure of regional fire and rescue service control centres. The 'No' campaign claimed the decision to close the centres was linked to the proposed regional assembly. But the TUC said the ODPM made the decision more than two years ago as part of ongoing restructuring of the emergency services.

A travel plan good practice guide for the NHS in London will be launched in September, based on the experiences of London hospital trusts across 48 major sites. Developed by transport consultancy Steer Davies Gleave, the guide advocates active travel such as walking and cycling to reduce dependency on cars. Latest approaches include a personal journey planning pilot for Whittington Hospital staff, linking the travel plan with an existing environment programme at Great Ormond Street Hospital and funding pool bikes, changing facilities and car-share programmes.

Aedas has been awarded two trophies at the Public Private Finance Awards 2004 for its work on the Stoke schools refurbishment project. The architect has been involved in the project to upgrade and maintain the city's 109 schools since 1999. The scheme won the best operational project and best operational education project awards.

A multi-million pound diagnostic treatment centre at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham has been given the green light. The three-storey building will provide day care and surgery facilities for patients across a range of medical disciplines. Plans designed by Rees-Evata Europe, a joint venture between architecture and planning consultancies Evata UK and USA-based Rees Associates, include a sculpture garden that could act as a forum for artists.

Economic development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has appointed William Roe as chairman. He succeeds historian, author and broadcaster Jim Hunter, who is stepping down after six years. Roe is chairman and director of business consultancy Rocket Science UK, and chairman of software solutions firm Mysterian.
