Regeneration News: Funding to extend public consultation

Funding to extend public consultation on the regeneration of King's Cross in north London by a further two weeks has been secured by the London Borough of Camden. The consultation will now continue until the first week of October. Argent St George, Excel and London and Continental Railways submitted redevelopment plans for the area last May. Charity Planning Aid for London will work with Camden, the London Borough of Islington and the King's Cross Development Forum on the consultation exercise.

Regeneration News: Developer Lovell chosen

Developer Lovell has been chosen to refurbish nearly half the homes covered by Wales's first council housing stock transfer. The company will modernise more than 2,500 homes in Bridgend for social landlord Valleys to Coast Housing. The scheme will cost £15 million.

Regeneration News: Development team answer questions

The development team from Chetwood Associates, the architects behind a proposed masterplan for St Austell town centre, answered questions from the public at a consultation on their plans last week. Around 500 people viewed the latest designs as part of the consultation process. The regeneration scheme is a partnership between the South West of England Regional Development Agency, Restormel Borough Council and David McLean Developments. A planning application is likely to be submitted to the borough council next month.

Regeneration News: Reclamation of former coal mine site

Nearly £10 million has been allocated to the reclamation of a former coal mine site at Kiveton near Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The £9.6 million allocation from English Partnerships' national coalfields programme will be used to redevelop the 81ha site into public space. The project, a partnership between Renaissance South Yorkshire and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, will also investigate the possible reuse of the pithead baths. Once the work is complete, the Land Restoration Trust will take over the management of the site.

Regeneration News: Developer sought to regenerate site

A developer is being sought to regenerate a 1.2ha site on Blyth Quayside in Northumberland owned by regional development agency One North East. The agency wants to develop a mixed-use scheme, but it must meet sustainable building criteria. The quayside, which has seen £20 million of investment, is home to the New and Renewable Energy Centre. The deadline for expressions of interest is 21 September.

Regeneration News: Amended plans for sports complex in Doncaster

Amended plans for a sports complex in Doncaster could lead to a £140 million investment in the borough, according to a report for mayor Martin Winter carried out by consultancy DTZ Pieda. The study, published last week, concludes that expanding the proposed Lakeside Sports Centre would attract £140 million in economic benefits plus £26 million during construction. The project would also create up to 470 jobs. The larger proposed centre, featuring a 15,000-seat stadium, will cost £12 million more than the project originally proposed by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, which has yet to decide on the scheme.

Regeneration News: Chairman-designate appointed

Northampton Saints Rugby Football Club chairman Keith Barwell has been appointed chairman-designate of the West Northamptonshire Urban Development Corporation. He will be appointed chairman when parliament formally approves the corporation, which will oversee the expansion of Northampton, Daventry and Towcester, with responsibility for strategic planning decisions. More than 50,000 homes are planned in the area by 2031.

Regeneration News: Councourse Tower bought by English Partnerships

Councourse Tower next to Liverpool's Lime Street station has been bought by English Partnerships. The quango is expected to demolish the tower as part of plans to develop a gateway to the city in time for its tenure as European Capital of Culture 2008. It has already acquired a complex of 1960s shops on the station frontage and is in talks with occupiers to leave the properties before development can proceed.

Regeneration News: First phase secures planning permission

The first phase of a major regeneration scheme in north Kent secured detailed planning permission last week. Gravesham Borough Council granted consent for Countryside Properties PLC's regeneration of the Gravesend Canal Basin. Under the £120 million scheme, disused industrial land and buildings at the site will be transformed into a riverside area to be known as the Embankment. The project will create up to 1,000 homes, 25 per cent of which will be affordable, a neighbourhood centre, shops and leisure facilities.
