A colourful carnival procession passed through the north-west London streets of Stonebridge and Harlesden last week as part of the seventh annual Stonebridge Cultural Celebration. Hundreds of people attended the festival, organised by community group Stoned Arts and staff from Stonebridge Housing Action Trust. The event also featured a sport tournament and music from artists including Zena, formerly of pop group Mis-Teeq, and reggae singer Peter Hunningale. Speaking for the housing trust, Andrea-Mae McLean said: "This event is fundamental in promoting the coming together and expression of local artistic talent in the rich and diverse community of Stonebridge."

The Government's canal body has secured £350,000 of European funds for the first stage of the restoration of the Cotswold canals. British Waterways is one of five to secure funds from the European Union's Interreg IIIB programme. The four-year, £700,000 project will focus on a 500-metre demonstration section of the Cotswold canal.

A mixed-use development in central London offering affordable homes - 63 for rent and 18 for sale - opened last week. Pimlico Village in Victoria includes a supermarket and eight other retail units. The development is one of the first to exceed the 50 per cent affordable housing element in mixed-use schemes recommended by London mayor Ken Livingstone, said Network Housing Group, the housing association partnership behind the scheme.

Members on the City of Edinburgh planning committee approved an office development and public arcade at the former Morrison Street goods yard last week. The scheme will include offices, shops, bars and cafes around a European-style, five-storey public arcade and square. The developers are the EDI Group, a private firm owned by Edinburgh City Council.

Brighton's first housing development for key workers has opened. Four apartments at Pelham Court, near the city centre, will be sold to key workers while ten will be let at below market rates, according to the Moat Housing Group. The group are providing the flats in partnership with developer Red Square, Brighton & Hove Regeneration Partnership and the South-East of England Development Agency. The Moat Housing group said the other 23 apartments at Pelham Court will be sold privately.

A guide to improving high streets blighted by traffic has been published by campaign group Transport 2000. The guide offers advice on slowing traffic and making it easier to cross the road. It also recommends planting more trees and providing seats and drinking fountains as ways of turning high streets into places where people want to be. The manual describes good practice case studies including pedestrian-friendly high streets in Kensington in west London (above), the Netherlands and Germany.
