More than 2,400 homes have been approved at three housing sites in Tonbridge and Malling, Kent. Following an inquiry last year, the secretary of state has ruled that all three sites should be brought forward, despite the over-supply that would result up to 2011. He held that the high proportion of affordable housing in the long term outweighed interim numerical concerns. Vincent and Gorbing acted as consultant on the scheme.

A planning complaint against Daventry District Council has been upheld by local government ombudsman Jerry White, who concluded that the authority had caused maladministration causing injustice. The complainant, a tenant farmer, argued that the council should not have granted consent for a residential development on a farmyard that he rents because it meant that he would lose his livelihood.

A £5 million marine energy centre to test potential wave energy generators opened in Orkney, Scotland, this week. It comes a week after the government announced £50 million to fund wave and tidal power technologies. In Brief: The Leverhulme Centre granted planning permission

The Leverhulme Centre for Human Evolutionary Studies, designed by Sheppard Robinson for the University of Cambridge, has been granted planning permission by Cambridge City Council. The £4 million centre will be the UK's largest research institute for human evolutionary studies. It will, for the first time, house the complete archaeological collection of the university's department of biological anthropology.
