13 August 2004
A 'promenade of light' has been chosen to be the centrepiece of a redesigned public space in a neglected part of central London. Architect Tonkin Liu's vision was selected from a shortlist of five designs. Tonkin Liu will now consult locals on the final design for Old Street, which has become a trendy evening playground but is in a poor state of repair. The promenade would have lights installed in trees (see visualisation, above), which would be activated by people's movement below, creating a lit green canopy. Competition and exhibition organisers the Architecture Foundation expect work to start next spring.
