Unemployment rose by a 0.1 percentage point to 4.8 per cent in the three months up to and including June 2004 from the previous quarter, the Office for National Statistics announced as Regeneration & Renewal went to press. Stop Press: Transport for London to press ahead with extension

Transport for London, the body in charge of public transport in the capital, will press ahead with a western extension to London's congestion charge scheme, subject to the availability of funding and after a period of further consultation. In a mayoral statement issued this week, Ken Livingstone revealed that the scheme will be a single zone, with free through routes on the A40 and the Inner Ring Road. He said that the end of charging could be brought forward to 6pm if the extension goes ahead, in order to assist businesses.

Time was when the new towns were the glamorous leading edge of the renewal of urban Britain and planners were clearly in control of that agenda. Today regeneration is where the action is and for planners involved in regeneration in Wales these are interesting times indeed.

The government is taking the need for more homes seriously. Following the chancellor's spending review, deputy prime minister John Prescott boosted his department's spending on tackling housing shortages and reviving northern economies to a massive £38 billion over five years. Housing expenditure is due to go up by 4.1 per cent a year in real terms, extra affordable homes will be built and the number of social rented houses and flats built each year will increase by 10,000.
