Regeneration News: Economic development programme of HAT
13 August 2004
The economic and community development programme of Birmingham's Castle Vale Housing Action Trust (HAT) has been successful and cost-effective in improving employment, according to an independent report published last week. The study, by ECOTEC Research and Consulting, found that the programme has helped to reduce unemployment from 26 to five per cent. It has also raised social, economic, living and environmental conditions in Castle Vale, the report concludes. Castle Vale is home to 9,000 people and is the largest post-war estate in the city. Birmingham City Council ran the estate until 1993, when the HAT acquired the land.

Regeneration News: Cambridge Econometrics publishes latest edition
13 August 2004
Cambridge Econometrics has published its latest edition of Regional Economic Prospects. The document contains detailed macroeconomic and industrial forecasts to the year 2015 in the UK's regions. Strongest performance is expected in Wales and Yorkshire and Humberside, based on their sharp improvement in consumer service and manufacturing combined with continuing strong growth in construction. London and the South East are expected to feature among the fastest-growing regions. Employment in the South East has continued to increase while earnings have also grown strongly, reflecting the region's tight labour market. Scotland's growth is expected to be slightly slower than the UK average.

The mixed-use proposal, designed by Chetwood Architects, includes a supermarket, flats, offices, a community hall, car parking and leisure facilities. CABE recommends that greater focus be paid to the plan's form and scale to help the design process.

A significant level of investment by the private sector over the past 12 months is a sign that Corby is on the move, according to the town's urban regeneration company. Matalan, Westland Rollers and the Department of Work and Pensions are locating in the town, providing up to 400 jobs, says Catalyst Corby in its annual report. Major investments in the housing market have been confirmed by Taylor Woodrow and Rosemound Developments and housing completions are up by more than 60 per cent in 2003-04 from the previous year.
Regeneration News: Plans to convert ground-floor terminal
13 August 2004
Plans to convert the ground-floor terminal and grain warehouse at Victoria Quays in Sheffield into offices have been refused. Sheffield City Council's city centre and east planning and highways board turned down the application because councillors want the development to be varied and not dominated by any single use. The committee concluded that there are plenty of other good sites for offices in the city. The warehouses are listed buildings in the canal basin and the upper floors have already been converted into flats.
Regeneration News: Housing developments should take account
13 August 2004
Housing developments should take account of residents' needs and demands placed on services, the Civic Trust has advised. The trust claims that its social impact study of the Convoys Wharf development in Deptford, south London, reveals a lack of forward thinking about the impact of housing development on health and education provision. Proposals for homes on the wharf could double the area's population and the study found that agencies are failing to work together to cater for the community's needs. A multi-agency forum has been brought together to tackle these issues.
