Economic Development brief: Price of farmland soars

The price of farmland is soaring as demand outstrips supply, a land survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors reveals. The price of farmland in the 12 months to the second quarter this year rose by 16 per cent to an average of £8,630 per hectare - the highest ever recorded, the study says - compared with this period last year. More lone parents are in work than ever before, according to figures released this week by the Office For National Statistics. The figures show that there were 971,000 lone parents in work in spring 2004, up 276,000 since 1997. At the same time the number of lone parents claiming benefits has fallen by a fifth. Three Scottish island communities have linked up to try to tackle economic and social regeneration. The Shetland islands of Unst, Yell and Fetlar have formed the North Isles Renewable Energy Partnership. The group has received funding from the EU-funded Leader+ programme, economic development agency Shetland Enterprise and the Scottish Executive to hire a renewable energy development officer for two years.

The London Development Agency (LDA) has bought the film studio used by the production company behind TV dramas Footballers' Wives (above) and Bad Girls. Three Mills Studio in east London, which has also been the location of films 28 Days Later and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, will be managed by the LDA as a media complex with the advice of industry body Film London. LDA director of regeneration and development Tony Winterbottom said the acquisition was part of an "ongoing commitment to develop the capital's creative strengths through its Creative London project", which involves the development of ten hubs offering workspace for creative industries.
