A children's fun day marked the official opening of a new play area on the Warner Road estate in Camberwell last week. The opening follows the completion of an agreement made by residents and registered social landlord Southern Housing Group to improve the London estate. The day included a variety of activities aimed at the young, including a live DJ, a fire-eating entertainer, football activities and face painting. Southern Housing Group invited local children to give their opinions on what they wanted to see in the play area and to choose the final design from a shortlist of three.

Leeds City Council is set to receive a £16.1 million for housing in the area following an inspection from the Audit Commission's Housing Inspectorate. Leeds North-West Homes was inspected as part of the Government's Arms Length Housing Management initiative. The Government has allocated £150 million to the scheme and extra cash can be secured only if the inspectorate gives it a 'good' rating.

Council housing waiting lists in the South-East have grown by more than 35,000 households in just four years, according to National Housing Federation research. Between 1999 and 2003, waiting lists increased from 111,425 to 146,880, an increase of one third. The study concludes that only 92 affordable homes were being built in each local authority area yearly, while 112 were sold through the Right to Buy. Proposals to spend £1.8 million on improving the physical environment of Camden have been approved by the north London council. The authority's pledge to make Camden a "cleaner, greener, safer and more attractive place", includes spending £200,000 on night-time street cleansing and £400,000 on the maintenance of the borough's parks.
