Fun day for youngsters

A group of young people from Brent in north London are pictured enjoying a visit last week to Thorpe Park leisure centre in Surrey as part of a summer programme organised by the borough council's Neighbourhood Renewal Team for Harlesden and Stonebridge. The Summer Evening Grants programme is aimed at providing activities for young people in the Harlesden and Stonebridge area outside of the hours in which local agencies normally operate. The scheme, which was designed following consultation with local young people, is being run in conjunction with seven voluntary sector organisations.

Community Renewal brief: BLF money awarded to voluntary sector groups

More than £500,000 of Big Lottery Fund money has been awarded to two voluntary sector groups to enable them to develop the capacity of grant holders. Two consortiums led by the Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) and Community Action Network will receive £258,000 and £242,000 respectively. The BTEG-led consortium will provide project development support to 150 voluntary and community groups.

An alliance of local community partnerships in Sheffield has been set up to tackle disadvantage through the promotion of community learning. The Waverley Community Learning Consortium aims to help communities around Waverley and the Sheffield Business Park to benefit from the area's economic revival by providing targeted training. It has put in a tender to the Learning and Skills Council for a three-year community learning project.
Community Renewal brief: Curfew put into force on Sheffield estate

A curfew is being put into force on a Sheffield estate as part of a month-long crack down on anti-social behaviour. A dispersal order has been granted to allow police officers to move on any groups of two or more people loitering in the city's Firth Park area. Under-16s will be returned to their homes if found loitering unaccompanied on the streets between 9pm and 6am.

Good causes distributor the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) has made grants totalling nearly £1 million to help fund research into the problems facing children living with poverty and disadvantage. In its latest round of funding in this area, BLF has granted money to charity Save the Children, the Anna Freud Centre for research into parents with mental health problems and the National Chidbirth Trust.
