In brief: Home Office to appeal against decision

The Home Office is to appeal against a decision to turn down plans for an asylum screening centre in Portishead. North Somerset Council rejected the proposal earlier this year on the grounds that the site is inadequately served by public transport. But in a statement issued last week, the Home Office said that it would challenge the decision after seeking the advice of a transport expert.

Bradford City Council has been advised to scrap long-standing plans for the substantial expansion of the town of Silsden, near Keighley, and find space for the homes elsewhere in its green belt instead. The inspector's report on Bradford's unitary development plan, published last month, deletes the authority's allocation for 2,000 homes at Silsden. The area has been earmarked for development since the 1990s. The report says land should be removed from the green belt on the fringes of Bradford to accommodate growth.

An energy strategy for Cornwall has been launched in a bid to cut carbon dioxide emissions, promote sustainable energy and reduce fuel poverty. The county-wide plan, unveiled by energy minister Stephen Timms last week, has been endorsed by 80 organisations in the region.
