Physical Regeneration: End in sight for eyesore

The demolition of a building regarded by many as one of the ugliest in Liverpool came a step closer last week when it was bought by government regeneration agency English Partnerships. The agency said that it had bought Concourse Tower, next to Lime Street Station, as part of its redevelopment programme for the area, which it plans to complete in time for Liverpool's European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008. English Partnerships is obliged to consider a range of options for the site, but a spokeswoman confirmed that demolition is a "real possibility".

A marine-energy test centre has opened in Orkney. The European Marine Energy Centre, which claims to be the only such institution in the world, was opened by Scottish deputy first minister Jim Wallace last week. The centre, which cost around £5 million, was funded by the Scottish Executive, economic development agencies Scottish Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Orkney Enterprise, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Carbon Trust, and Orkney Islands Council.

Ten jobs are set to be created on a remote Scottish island, following investment by economic development agency Western Islands Enterprise. Software developer Mysterian Limited already employs five people on Stornoway and another six on the mainland, but plans to expand its activities on the island after the award of the £180,000 grant.

Wales has one of the highest rates of business start-ups among the over-50s outside London, research shows. The principality is only exceeded in some parts of the south of England, a survey by the International Geographical Congress has found.
