Three sites shortlisted for aquarium

The docks on Merseyside could become home to the world's largest aquarium, it was revealed last week. Liverpool is one of three British locations shortlisted for the 44ha complex (see visualisation, above) by Nirah, the National Institute for Research into Aquatic Habitats. Nirah would replicate the tropical freshwater habitats of the Amazon and Mekong rivers, housing endangered fish, amphibians and reptiles. It is aiming to become one of Europe's premier tourist attractions.

Two-bedroom bungalows are being offered on a shared-ownership basis by Beth Johnson Housing Group. The group has built four shared-ownership bungalows and six town houses for rent on a previously derelict site.

Four cooks served food from the Caribbean, China, India and Europe using vegetables organically grown by children from the Youth Organic Environmental project on the Uplands allotment in Handsworth.

The event, organised by Focus Housing's Street Wardens scheme in Sparkbrook, Small Heath and Acocks Green, involved a series of surgeries where youngsters from different ethnic backgrounds met the agencies that support local communities.

Pharmacies set up as part of one-stop primary care centres will be required to offer a wide range of primary care and community-based services in addition to usual GP services, health minister Rosie Winterton announced last week. Under new guidelines, one-stop centres in areas with a population of 18,000 to 20,000 patients must offer dentistry, optometry, podiatry or other community-based services.
