Co-operative to run Shetland island ferry
27 August 2004
Residents of a remote Shetland Island are to form a co-operative to take control of their ferry, it was revealed this week. Shetland Islands Council has dropped plans to base the service, which runs between the island of Foula and the rest of the Shetland Islands, on the Shetland mainland as it says that the preferred option is for a co-operative of Foula islanders to take over the running of the ferry. The details of the scheme have yet to be finalised, but a council spokesman said he hoped the islanders would take over the service in the next couple of months. A council subsidy would still be paid to the ferry operators and the local authority would specify the number of services that the new operators would be required to provide.
