Plans for 1,500 Docklands homes submitted

Detailed plans for a mixed-use regeneration scheme, including around 980 affordable homes, have been submitted to Newham Council. The plans are for the 8ha Peruvian Wharf, which includes a new Docklands Light Railway station, named West Silvertown, 1,500 homes, 35 per cent of which will be affordable, and a working wharf. Sunny Crouch, project director of Peruvian Wharf, said: "We are able to deliver new jobs, homes, community facilities and open space, integrated around a new DLR station and incorporating a working wharf." Plans also include a new hotel, leisure and retail space, a riverside walkway and landscaped public space.

News brief: Liverpool development awarded grant

A mixed-use development in Liverpool has been awarded a £5 million grant by the North-West Development Agency. The Unity project, at Chapel Street, close to the Pier Head in Liverpool city centre, includes a 16-storey office tower, retail space and residential apartments. The project has received £5 million in European regional development funding and is due for completion by August next year.

London mayor Ken Livingstone has announced that Wapping and Rotherhithe Tube stations are to be retained in plans for the East London Line extension of the Underground. Local residents are likely to welcome the news, having campaigned for the stations' inclusion in the extended line, due for completion in 2010. The Government agreed last month to go ahead with the extension.
News brief: Vulnerable people not receiving support says Audit Commission

Vulnerable people in Lincolnshire are not receiving adequate support, according to inspection body the Audit Commission. The commission has awarded the Supporting People programme administered by Lincolnshire County Council 'no stars' out of a possible three. The service fails to offer value for money, and its future direction has not been properly planned, the commission said.
News brief: English Partnerships to fund redevelopment

English Partnerships, the Government's regeneration agency, is funding a £9.6 million redevelopment of a former coalmine at Kiveton, near Rotherham. Forming part of the National Coalfields Programme, the aim of the project is to transform the former colliery into an open public space. Renaissance South Yorkshire will work with Rotherham Borough Council and the local community on the project.
Come back, Liverpudlians

A new website aims to draw on Liverpool's rich maritime heritage to fill a growing number of job vacancies in the city. Using the slogan: "Come back to Liverpool. Your city needs you," the website aims to lure former Merseysiders back to the city. Launched by Liverpool recruitment agency Bluefire Consulting, the website says the city has the fastest rate of job creation outside London and is now Britain's safest urban area. The site urges skilled workers to return to Liverpool, which expects to attract £2 billion of investment over the next five years and whose unemployment is at a historic low of 2.9 per cent.
