The concept of separating the work place from the home is deeply embedded in the planning system. At first sight, there is nothing wrong with this. Land zoning is what planning is all about, isn't it? Yet the trouble comes with that familiar complaint about planning's failings rearing its ugly head: the system's inability to respond to rapidly changing social or economic pressures. Live-work development is a case in point. This attracts more brickbats than laurels because it confounds traditional planning thinking. Planners suspect that developers can make a packet by insinuating residential schemes into hitherto employment areas. But such fears are groundless when old factories and warehouses, perfect for live-work development, are left to rot.
