Dorset needs to cater for 39,000 homes between 2001 and 2016, according to the county's planning authorities. The draft replacement Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole structure plan, currently on deposit, proposes that 2,600 homes a year should be built to meet demand, 80 per cent of which should be on previously developed land. The plan adds that development in Dorset will be focused in and around the Bournemouth-Poole conurbation and renewal efforts will be targeted at Weymouth. A task group has set its recommendations for how each region can help deliver the strategy, which will include demolition programmes. One North East, Yorkshire Forward and the North West Development Agency worked together on the report, which will be presented to the ODPM in September.
