First phase of the Brit Oval successfully completed

The first phase of the Brit Oval cricket ground redevelopment was successfully completed in time for last week's test match between England and the West Indies. The south London scheme, managed by Drivers Jonas Sport, involved the delivery of 11,500 seats. More seats, a press centre and hospitality facilities will be built in phase two. The project is designed by HOK Architects and built by Taylor Woodrow Construction.

The ODPM is holding a consultation on the regulatory framework governing the political activities of local government employees. The paper seeks views on the framework, in particular whether the restrictions on council employees' political activities are proportionate. The paper also invites opinions on regulations for political assistants and on the arrangements for allowing employees paid time off work to serve as members of local authorities. In brief: English Heritage backs government call

English Heritage has backed a government call for all local authorities in England to nominate councillors to act as historic environment champions for their communities. It is envisaged that such "heritage heroes" would put the historic environment at the heart of their council agendas, provide leadership on heritage issues, join up policy between departments and develop close relationships with design champions. There are around 50 of these champions currently, but few are elected members, according to English Heritage.

Evesham, Uttoxeter and Spalding have been selected as beacon towns from more than 235 candidates in the Countryside Agency's market towns initiative. Each town will demonstrate how best to tackle a particular issue. For example, Uttoxeter will work with partners to produce an integrated transport plan for the town and surrounding area. There will be a total of 18 beacon towns in England to share best practice and influence policy at regional, national and European levels.

A controversial landfill site in Cornwall has been given the green light for extension by the Environment Agency. County Environmental Services Ltd will be able to expand the site at St Day, near Redruth. Villagers have been protesting against the tip for several years, but the agency insisted that a monitoring regime will control operations on the site, as well as setting limits for noise, odour, dust and other emissions. The site is one of two main landfills taking the county's domestic and non-hazardous commercial wastes.
