Plans to transform Darlington town centre have been put out for public consultation by urban designer Gillespies. The £6.5 million Pedestrian Heart scheme aims to create a series of public spaces in the town. Proposals include illuminated period housing, reactive bus stops that change colour as buses approach and lighting columns that measure the pulse rates of people who touch them. A water feature, a dedicated one-way bus loop, avenues of trees, granite surfacing and space for street activities are also planned. Gillespies is working with Darlington Borough Council and regional development agency One North East on the project.

Editorial: House builders keep customer in the dark
30 July 2004
House builders like to think that they are in a risk-taking industry with tight margins, courageously overcoming a panoply of obstacles ranging from land constraints through to the planning system. It's a badge of honour, but also an excuse for not telling potential customers much about the environmental impact of their homes. If the customer has not got the taste for sustainability, why should they bother? As this week's survey by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, the Halifax and WWF-UK shows, potential buyers can get their hands on a raft of information about the performance of a car but not on the environmental impact of a home. This is all the more bizarre when you consider that buying a property is the biggest investment most people ever make and that the environment is a massively important issue.
