A £70 million recycling scheme has been launched in east London. Shanks and London Remade will divide the investment between two brownfield sites in Beckton and Rainham. London Remade chief executive Hugh Carr Harris claimed that the scheme, which will create 100 jobs, would increase recycling rates in the Thames Gateway by 500 per cent.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to discuss revised plans for a £36 million marina development in Bridlington after its initial proposal was rejected by the secretary of state. The scaled-back scheme, which forms part of a masterplan for the town, brings the marina down from 21ha to 10ha and includes 500 berths. The council's cabinet was set to consider the latest proposals as Planning went to press.

The Dunlop Semtex factory in Brynmawr, south Wales, is to be replaced by a supermarket and a public house. The Design Commission for Wales has approved detailed plans submitted by Asda after it was granted outline planning permission by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council last month. The 3,200 sq m store will feature an integral restaurant with a separate family pub and beer garden overlooking a lake. It will also include parking space for 500 cars. The development is expected to create up to 300 jobs in the area.

Leicester Regeneration Company is seeking a development partner for its first redevelopment opportunity at the city's Charles Street Police Station. The site was bought on the company's behalf by the East Midlands Development Agency and is expected to yield more than 9,000 sq m of office space and capacity for around 600 jobs. The scheme also includes 24 flats and restaurant accommodation.

Efforts to kick-start the north Staffordshire housing market will create thousands of jobs in construction, a report concludes this week. The ECOTEC study, commissioned by market renewal pathfinder Renew North Staffordshire, found that the number of people working in construction would increase from 19,000 to 23,000 in 2014. The jobs will range from manual work to posts with higher levels of training, such as architects, civil engineers and quantity surveyors. The study recommends raising awareness of construction in local schools and financial incentives for firms to take on apprentices. The report can be viewed at www.renewnorthstaffs.gov.uk.

The Capita Group has been chosen to set up a joint venture company to provide highways maintenance, design and landscaping in Salford. Capita estimates that the service contract will generate around £250 million over its initial 12-year run. Salford City Council has also chosen two construction companies for new build and refurbishment work. G&J Seddon and Cruden Construction will work on five years' worth of projects, including a £4 million sports village, a primary school and housing refurbishment.

The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is to be redeveloped following an £11 million Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant. The cash will be used to replace existing extensions to the 17th century museum with a purpose-built six-storey building to improve access and displays. The HLF has also awarded £11 million for the restoration of a 9.5km stretch of canal in the Cotswolds and a £5 million grant for phase two of the Natural History Museum's Darwin Centre.

A modular prefab scheme for key workers that was built in four days has been unveiled by the Hyde Group. The Barling Court development in Stockwell, south London, is a suite of eight flats that exceeds UK sound insulation and energy efficiency standards. The homes, which were made in Poland and shipped over by Hyde and PCKO Architects, will be offered to key workers through the housing association's INplace subsidiary.
