In brief: Design competition launched by Bradford Centre Regeneration

A design competition to create a flagship building on the site of the former Odeon Cinema in Prince's Way has been launched by urban renewal company Bradford Centre Regeneration. Local people will be consulted during the judging. After carrying out a survey, options identified by consultancy Ove Arup & Partners involve demolishing the cinema, retaining its two towers or completely redeveloping the entire site.

English Partnerships started work on the New Fryston village green project in Castleford last week. The redevelopment is one of a number of schemes to be showcased next year on Channel 4 as part of the Castleford Project. It is the first phase of the transformation of the 98ha Fryston and Wheldale site running along the River Aire. Plans for the green include traffic calming measures and a children's play area.

Britain's first social enterprise zone has brought together residents and public sector staff to solve problems in London's East End and influenced national policy, according to a report published this week. The zone, in the Forest Gate and Plaistow areas of Newham, was established six years ago to tackle community problems. Many of its ideas and initiatives have helped local residents and demonstrate how mainstream government resources can be harnessed effectively at local level, the report finds. Developers AMEC, Lovells, George Wimpey and Urban Splash are in the running for the regeneration of the Park Hill estate in Sheffield, Britain's largest grade II* listed building. Registered social landlords Derwent Living, Manchester Methodist Housing and Riverside Housing have also made the shortlist, announced last week by Sheffield City Council and English Partnerships and drawn up from a total of 14 submissions. The scheme aims to deliver a high-quality redevelopment, including permanent repairs to the buildings' historic details.

Plans unveiled for world's biggest indoor ski slope

Plans have been unveiled for what is claimed to be the world's biggest indoor ski slope, at Great Blakenham in Suffolk. The 100m high slope will be the centrepiece of the SnOasis resort. An outline planning application has been submitted to Mid Suffolk District Council by Onslow Suffolk Ltd. The scheme also includes 350 ski lodges, a hotel and conference centre.
