A tied-arch bridge over the River Thames at Walton has been given the go-ahead after deputy prime minister John Prescott's decision not to call in the proposal. Surrey County Council can now issue permission for the scheme, which will link Walton and Shepperton with roads to Cowey Sale. The authority will now publish statutory orders for road alterations and land acquisitions. The £25 million bridge has to be built by 2009, when permission for the current temporary crossing expires.

The proposal is for the Eastgate and Harewood quarter, which covers 8.5ha east of the Victorian quarter. It is intended to extend Leeds's shopping appeal, elongate pedestrian linkages, generate more mixed uses and create more employment opportunities.
