A masterplan for a residential development in Bowthorpe, west Norwich, is to be drawn up by Mouchel Parkman for Norwich City Council. The 30ha Three Score site is a long-standing allocation in the council's local plan and the last remaining greenfield site earmarked for development. The masterplan will be based on a detailed planning brief already adopted by the council for around 1,000 homes, a primary school, a local centre and support services.

Mott MacDonald has been reappointed by the Highways Agency to provide advice on the use of variable message signs (VMS) on England's motorways and trunk roads. The project forms part of an ongoing investment in VMS to display information to motorists to deliver safe roads and reliable journeys. Mott MacDonald will prepare information explaining the use of VMS and advise on displaying safety messages and policy such as the use of mobile VMS at road works.

The seven-year contract for the Countryside Agency aims to find the best way to record lost rights of way, including missing links in the network and wrongly recorded routes. The firm will trawl through 250,000 documents held in local and national archives to look for evidence of rights of way that may have fallen into disuse.

A flagship lighting project along the Mersey Estuary is being led by design consultancy Atkins Odlin. The River of Light project aims to improve the night-time environment along the 56km stretch of the river from the Runcorn-Widnes crossing to the coastal town of Southport. This includes lighting up buildings and specific routes and providing a line of beacons at key points. Atkins Odlin, a part of the Mouchel Parkman group, helped draw up the masterplan for the £12 million scheme for Mersey Waterfront.
