Stop Press: Fairer system says ODPM report

The restructuring of social rents in England has ensured a fairer and more coherent system, the ODPM reported this week. A three-year government interim review concluded that the social rent reform established in April 2003 is working well but needs fine-tuning. Housing minister Keith Hill said social tenants were benefiting from rents that were well below what private sector rates for similar properties. He added: "Tenants will continue to be protected from large or sudden rent increases."
Stop Press: Deal to build hotel near Millennium Dome announced

A deal to build a 600-bed hotel and casino on land near the Millennium Dome has been announced. The Las Vegas-style casino will feature a full range of gaming tables and up to 900 slot machines. Entertainment group Kerzner International agreed the deal with Anschutz Entertainment Group, which plans to create a sports and music arena at the Greenwich site. Kerzner International says it will spend £550 million on developing the casino, along with two others in Manchester and Glasgow.
