Turning Point: Inspiration leads to church revival
18 June 2004
Having an interest in countryside, travel, business and heritage, British Rail's management training scheme in the late 1970s proved my ideal career starting point. Within three years I was their youngest area manager. Reorganisation prompted my unexpected change of direction to Scottish secretary for The Duke of Edinburgh's award programme, an opportunity to shape the youth work programme I'd so much enjoyed as a teenage participant.

Opinion: Green homes for non-believers
18 June 2004
I'm against global warming. I thought you'd like to know this. I'm against it in principle, you understand, as I'm not entirely sure I believe in the science of those who claim it's happening. Even more than that, I don't really see the special significance of this period in Earth's history in which Man temporarily rules the roost. I mean, we worry about hothouse gases and the loss of biodiversity now, but in 50,000 years the Earth will have survived just fine and we'll have long since clocked off as a species. Japanese knot-weed will be here long after we have merged with the universe by becoming extinct. So I'm against global warming per se (for Guardian-reading reasons no doubt) but it probably doesn't matter in the long run, because we don't actually matter in the long run.
Opinion: Not-so-modern apprenticeships
18 June 2004
A new report from the Equal Opportunities Commission investigates gender segregation in Modern Apprenticeships Schemes. The report, Plugging Britain's Skills Gap, shows that in professions such as accountancy, law and medicine, women are now almost on a par with men.
Opinion: French follow UK lead on city centre stations
18 June 2004
Here's a story you almost certainly haven't heard about: SNCF, the French national railway, has decided to stop building beetroot stations. No, don't try to sell this one to the UK Independence Party: it isn't part of a sinister European plot to transport millions of kilograms of surplus vegetables to a beetroot mountain in some remote corner of rural France. Beetroot stations are on the TGV; you may even have used one on your last holiday.
