The Government will fail to meet its anti-poverty pledge unless it tackles London's child poverty crisis, according to a report by campaign group End Child Poverty. Although UK child poverty continues to fall, the number of children in London who live in poverty is rising, with half of all inner London children now in this category. A programme to support registered social landlords (RSLs) increase the use of private sector leasing (PSL) schemes for empty homes was launched this week. Housing charity the Empty Homes Agency has appointed Paul Beard as project manager. Beard will initially develop a report and model on PSL as well as being a contact point for RSL advice. Stephen Nickell, professor of economics at the London School of Economics and a member of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee, is the latest appointment to the Welsh Assembly's Economic Research Advisory Panel. Nickell's appointment will run until 30 April 2007. The panel advises the Welsh Government on the content, outputs and dissemination of its economic research programme and on developing economic research capacity in the principality.
