A new tier of radio stations run by and for local communities has moved closer with the laying of legislation before Parliament last week. The Comm- unity Radio Order, if agreed by both Houses, will allow media regulator Ofcom to advertise community radio licences. Potential broadcasters could then bid for cash from a £500,000 Ofcom fund to set up and run stations. Further details will shortly be appearing at www.ofcom.org.uk. Three quarters of local authorities have area committees or forums to give people a say in how their neighbourhood is run, according to interim research findings from the Local Government Association. But the LGA warns that any government moves to bolster neighbourhood governance must build on the success of existing arrangements rather than impose their own solutions. Amateur sports clubs are missing out on tax benefits, reduced business rates and gift aid potentially worth £148 million, according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The DCMS is urging clubs to claim these by registering with the Inland Revenue as Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs). The study, by the London Development Agency and campaign group London Food Link, adds that 13 east London wards have no local provision of affordable fresh food. The first phase of a green spaces project in Deptford in London was opened last week as part of a drive to revitalise the area. The Ferranti Park has been built on a disused site in the borough of Lewisham opposite the award-winning Laban International Dance Centre. Guests at the park's opening event were also given information about the next phase of work to be carried out on the adjacent nature park. London Development Agency regeneration director Tony Winterbottom said the park is a key step forward in regeneration plans for the area.
