Proposals for a futuristic monorail system for London have been unveiled by architect Gareth Pearce. The MonoMetro would be able to carry 20,000 passengers an hour on any road wide enough to take a double decker bus, consortium MonoMetro claims. Pearce said the network is the only system that can be delivered in time to "save London's Olympic bid". He added: "So far £150 million has been spent on feasibility studies alone. By contrast £20 million will allow a working demonstration of MonoMetro connecting Oxford Street and Kensington."

Bristol has secured an extra £3.9 million of European funds to tackle inner-city poverty. The Objective 2 Neighbourhood Action Plan programme, which was due to end in 2006, is to be extended to 2008. The extra cash will help create new jobs, as well as improving community facilities, in Ashley, Easton, Lawrence Hill, Filwood and Windmill Hill.

The East Midlands has climbed seven places to 28th position in the European economic league table over the last five years, the East Midlands Development Agency (Emda) has announced. The figures come from the European Union's data arm Eurostat. Eurostat assessed regions on economic output, employment and economic inequality.

Gloucestershire's rural areas will receive a £3 million boost from the South-West Regional Development Agency, the RDA revealed last week. The cash is part of the £7 million Rural Renaissance programme that will support any scheme, such as ICT, transport or business support, aimed at strengthening the rural economy.
