Public and community sector partnership the Rotherham Partnership has appointed Jeff Wharfe and Ian Squires to its team. Wharfe has been appointed local economic and development partnership manager. He joins from running a start-up software company in Scunthorpe and was previously deputy director of economic development at North East Lincolnshire Council. Squires becomes single regeneration budget 5 and 6 area-based scheme manager. He was previously a project auditor at Rotherham Borough Council.

Ian Lindsay has been appointed deputy chief executive of regeneration partnership the Kent Thameside Delivery Board. Lindsay's role will be to drive forward regeneration in the area, working closely with the lead agencies to deliver strategic benefits for the local community in relation to town centre regeneration, housing, job creation, environmental initiatives and transport infrastructure. Lindsay has worked at Kent Thameside since July 2002, having previously been assistant director of housing and head of regeneration at the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

A programme to help solve the lack of affordable housing in Manchester's Castlefield area has been unveiled by property developer Urban Splash. It says the Moho scheme (see visualisation, above) is the first development of modular homes for private sale in the UK and is intended to increase the speed and efficiency of new housing. The apartments will be built in factories and arrive on site fully glazed, with all internal fixtures and fittings, including wood floors, bathrooms and kitchens. Housing minister Keith Hill has backed the idea, claiming such developments will help create attractive, sustainable communities. Urban Splash hopes that the Moho principles could be rolled-out successfully to other parts of the country, including the South-East.
Gateway UDC plan an 'indigestible mess'

Government plans for an urban development corporation (UDC) in east London have become an "indigestible mess", according to a leading planning academic. Sir Peter Hall, writing in this week's Regeneration & Renewal (see p18), attacks finalised proposals published two weeks ago for the UDC, which aims to deliver a government housebuilding programme in the Thames Gateway.
