Crime levels in a deprived part of Liverpool have fallen by 16 per cent after a series of initiatives led by the local New Deal for Communities (NDC) partnership and police. The Kensington Regeneration area has seen burglaries fall by 34 per cent, robberies by 38 per cent and theft from motor vehicles by 27 per cent after introducing alley-gating, community wardens and CCTV schemes.

Lyons, who recently led a review which recommended relocating civil servants to the regions, told an audience at Leicester's New Walk Museum that the city should build on its distinctive identity by celebrating its colourful mix of ethnic groups. "Black and Asian civil servants will feel safe and welcome here," he said.
