Work has begun on a new creative quarter in Bristol. Verve Properties is converting a disused industrial complex into a mixed-use scheme in the Brislington area of the city. Targeting the media and creative industries, the development, known as Paintworks (see visualisation, above), will comprise a range of low cost studios, live/work spaces, recreational units, cafe and events space opening onto a large courtyard earmarked for outdoor events and performances. Lettings have already been signed with a recording studio, an animation company and a firm specialising in recycled books. Work on the first phase of the 5ha site has already started and is expected to be completed early in 2005.

The Welsh research units were named new Centres of Excellence as part of the Centres of Excellence for Technology and Industrial Collaboration (Cetic) scheme. Cetic aims to create a multidisciplinary network of scientific expertise available to companies.

A strategic alliance was launched this week to support Manchester's construction boom, the city's economic development agency Manchester Enterprises announced. The Construction Partnership, including the construction industry and agencies such as the Learning and Skills Council, the North-West Development Agency and JobCentre Plus, aims to fill skills shortages to ensure a supply of construction workers to projects.
