Belfast's Greater Shankill Clean-Up Forum has been praised by equality minister John Spellar for winning an award under the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. The award was made in recognition of its work to remove graffiti in the city. Since May 2003, the forum has succeeded in removing 27 murals and sectarian graffiti and 7,000m of painted kerbstones.

The document details 52 areas that have been improved, including Bellenden in Southwark, south London. Local residents told the London Borough of Southwark that they wanted to see art introduced as part of the area's renewal. The £10 million Bournville Village Trust development in Birmingham has been opened. A medical centre has been built along with 54 houses and 12 bungalows for older people. The park has been renovated and 20-year-old trees have been planted. The scheme also includes the refurbishment of a parade of shops, installation of closed-circuit television cameras and lighting and paving improvements.

Tesco has signed a private housing deal with Grainger Trust to provide 104 flats above a new store on the site of the former South London Women's Hospital in Clapham. The original building frontage will be restored and the store is due to open at the end of next year. Tesco has similar developments in Kensington and Hammersmith.

Six housing associations are to run pilot projects to encourage enterprise development, enterprise minister Nigel Griffiths announced last week. Associations in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber and the South West will work with a range of partners in disadvantaged communities to support small businesses and social enterprises. The Phoenix Development Fund, run by the DTI's small business service, will supply funding of £1.35 million over two years.

A derelict Victorian library in Elephant and Castle, south London, is to be transformed into a training centre. The London Borough of Southwark has approved plans for the £3.4 million centre, which will provide accredited training for the media professions. It will also be used by community groups and will include commercial space. It is hoped that the project will encourage cultural growth in the area.
