St James Homes has gained planning approval to rescue and refurbish the former Hammersmith Pumping Station in west London. It will convert the 1.2ha site into 72 homes for private sale and affordable housing. Car parking, landscaping, public artwork and a riverside promenade will be included in the development. The Victorian station, built in 1879, is a listed building due to its architectural merit and historic importance.

Plans for a business park, DIY store, garden centre, builder's merchants and urban park on a site at Derby Road is being supported by Chesterfield Borough Council's planning committee. Buildings will be demolished to make way for the development, which will use around half the site. The council has yet to consider plans to build 300 homes and community and health facilities. The scheme is expected to cost more than £30 million and could create up to 2,000 jobs.

The ODPM's Living Spaces programme has announced awards totalling more than £4.7 million to community groups across the country. The three-year £30 million grant scheme is part of the government's sustainable communities plan. The scheme provides funds and support to community groups across England wanting to create or improve play areas, gardens, parks and other spaces. Nearly 10,000 organisations applied for funding, 177 of which have been awarded cash.

Plans for the redevelopment of the main campus of Merton College in Morden, south London, were unveiled this week. The work will involve demolishing part of the campus on London Road and creating a main entrance, library learning centre, classrooms and workshops. Work will start in the summer and be phased over the next three years. The £28 million scheme will be funded by the Learning and Skills Council.
